This is all due to a technical hiccup at the transmitter
I have a wide range of topics to cover before the festive season
You will recall in a previous episode about Sean oHares remarks that the Bridge was turning into “A lit up graveyard” Well as Jo Finnegan on Northern Sound would say :
Ladies And Gentlemen it has come to pass. The drink driving ban is the death knell of the local.I paid a flying visit to Sean recently and he is hanging in all the time.He wanted to know if myself and Terry were calling into the Bridge for a drink. It is only when you visit someone in hospital you realize how lucky you are to be out and about – never mind the doom and gloom.Leave that to George Lee on RTE
I also visited Ken Browne in hospital in Enniskillen Ken is suffering from a long term illness but was glad to see people from his native Butlersbridge. He talked goodo about times past .A photograph of the Bridge championship winning team hangs on the wall .
A youthfull John Shannon is on one knee and Brian Myles stands at the rere. The Reilly Brothers from Keeny Academy are also to the fore No tracksuits that time –just somebody lucky enough to have an overcoat was given if you were a sub.
A pull on a”Players Please or Woodbine fag was the norm. at half time.
I recalled an incident at half time when the Bridge was playing bad in the championship. As the they sat around this supporter shouted :yisll have to buck up : A player jumped up and shouted “who the F….. do you think you are “Matt Busby”
Ken was known as one of the better freetakers at that time and was able to point frees from out at the sideline
His singing with the Eugene Leddy Ceille Band took him far and near .Monday nights at Redhiils Carnival Busses from the Imperial Hotel Cavan Via Castletara Cross. On reaching the village they were hanging out the doors.,No health and safety issues those
days.Porter flowed in Kellys or Gem Dannys and guaranteed a row afterwards.
He had many stories to relate about the Late Paddy Mc Gowan
I met Paddy on the footpath discussing a tv game with the late Nancy Browne one Sunday evening She recalled how her mother lit a candle that Cavan would win. Paddy exclaimed” They wouldn’t lite a candle for you now if you were dead.”
Kens wish is that more people would visit him and reminis to pass away the long days
People may think that the tullybuck man is loosing the plot by going visiting patients in hospitals I have no undertakers business set up just yet.A certain undertaker in Cavan town used to visit patients in St Phelims and bring oranges if he heard the were on the way out.
Its not all doom and gloom around the Bridge .The tea- party Held in the hotel Kilmore to raise funds for the renovation of the church was another great success.
Next year the fund raising committee expect the males to host a table.
Classes will be held in the Community Centre after Christmass. You are not allowed to bring along a chain saw to cut the bread. Mickey Conaty of Aghadrumagullion was helping out a neighbour some years past and the late Ernie Seaman (the memory man) arrived at tea- time Mikey allowed that the woman of the house got a pain in her arm slicing bread for Ernie. So if you wish to host a table my advice is to not invite an “Ernie.”
We look forward to early in the new year when the Church will be re-opened .The exact date is not finalised but things are working along nicely.
The re- vamping of the Clones road has turned nicely with new road surface and markings A new footpath is completed out to the cemetery. This has created another problem.Parking is very limited at the cemetary so if you are attending a funeral it is advisible to leave your car in the village and use the foothpaths
On a lighter note in todays Daily Mail there is a photograph of Michael Smurfit and he states that “im just planning to chase young women”.Groucho Marks was once asked “do you still chase women “ Yes says he only if they are running downhill.
Will be back with more “balderdash” before the festive season
